If you’re a search engine marketer and if someone asks you to name two search engines, it’s more likely that you mention Google and Bing (or maybe Yahoo), right? Of course there are other search engines like Baidu, Yandex, Blekko, DuckDuckGo, etc. but Google and Bing are the two real search engines that matter the most to advertisers. Why? Because Google and Bing (Microsoft & Yahoo) have a combined market share of over 90% in the U.S. search market according to comScore.

Google vs. Yahoo Bing Network: Search Market Share

Google has a search market share of 67.5% in the U.S. and the combined market share of the Yahoo Bing network is around 30% as of March, 2014. So it means that when you advertise on Google AdWords and Bing Ads you’re already reaching 90% of searchers. AdGooroo, a market research company for search engine advertisers, previously compared Google AdWords and Bing Ads based on different performance metrics like Ad Impressions, Click-through Rates, Cost Per Click. They find that the average Cost Per Click (CPC) on Google AdWords for all the categories that they tested were higher than that of Bing Ads.

I have also noticed in the past that the average Cost Per Click on Google AdWords were ~20% higher than that of Bing Ads for the same set of keywords. And for highly competitive keywords the average Cost Per Click on AdWords were double than that of Bing Ads. Also, an infographic by Search Engine Journal suggests that the Cost Per Mille (CPM) on AdWords was 4.2 to 11.2 times higher than on Bing Ads in U.S.

3. Filter Search Partners

In Google AdWords, if you want to block your ads on a specific search partner network then you have to turn off all the search partner networks. But Bing Ads tells you how your ads are performing on individual search partner networks so that you can tweak your campaigns. For instance, if you find that the conversion rate for a specific search partner is extremely low then you can exclude that network from your ad groups or campaigns. 4. Set Daily/Monthly Budget

Google AdWords doesn’t accept PayPal (in fact I can’t recollect any Google products that accepts PayPal) but Bing Ads customers in the U.S. can add PayPal as a payment method. Go to Bing Ads > Accounts & Billing > Payment Methods to link your PayPal account with Bing Ads.

6. Writing Ad Copy Is Easier

Both Google AdWords and Bing Ads support only 25 characters for the ad title and  ~ 70 characters to describe the ad. In Google AdWords we have to describe the ad in two lines (35 characters each) but in Bing Ads we can enter the description in one line (of 71 character). It doesn’t make much difference technically but when you write an ad copy you’ll find it useful since you don’t have to split the description into two.

7. Less Advertiser Competition

There are over 1 million advertisers on Google AdWords. It means that the competition for the #1 ad spot on Google is much high compared to Bing Ads. So fewer advertisers must be bidding for a keyword on Bing Ads than on AdWords and it increases the chances of getting higher ad rank.

8. Negative Keywords

Bing Ads does not use broad match for negative keywords but in Google when you enter a keyword as a negative match it will be treated as a broad match. What does that mean? In Google AdWords, when you enter a keyword as a negative match Google will treat the keyword as a broad match (unless you used special symbols). For example, if you add “women” as a negative match then ads won’t show for the following keywords: “women”, “hats for women”, “women’s hats” but ads will show for “girl’s hats”, “sun hats”.

Now in Bing Ads, if you add “women” as a negative match then ads will show for all the above keywords (“hats for women”, “women’s hats”, “girl’s hats”, “sun hats”) except for the keyword “women”.

9. Set Time Zones At Campaign Level

In Google AdWords we set a time zone at an account level and Google allows to change it only once. But in Bing Ads, we can set account and campaign level time zones. You can’t change the time zone of a campaign once it is set but we can always create a new campaign with a different time zone and can import ads and keywords from another campaign.

10. Ad Group & Campaign Level Settings

In Google AdWords there are only campaign level settings so we can’t change individual ad group settings. But in Bing Ads, we can change language & location, default bids, demographic targeting, device targeting, ad rotations, etc. at the ad group level and it means better control over ads.

Go to Bing Ads > Campaigns > “Campaign Name” > Settings to control the settings of each campaign and go to Bing Ads > Campaigns > “Campaign Name” > “Ad Group Name” > Settings to control the settings of each ad group.

If you’re an advertiser on Google AdWords, Bing Ads, or any other pay-per-click advertising network then you know that you can target users by location and also by the devices that they’re using. For example, you can show your ads to users who live in the U.K. and are using a tablet computer.

Now if you’re an affiliate marketer who is engaged in direct linking (linking to advertiser’s landing pages from search marketing campaigns) then you can save money and improve your conversion rate by tweaking your pay-per-click campaigns so that you get the maximum return on your investment.

As you probably know, your affiliate network uses cookies to track sales and leads. It means that if a user clicked your advertisement from a mobile device and he later chooses to sign up from his PC then most probably you’re not entitled for a commission (depending upon how the affiliate program works).

That exactly is the reason why I choose to show my ads only on desktops and laptops whenever I start an affiliate marketing campaign on pay-per-click search engines. And I make sure that I don’t target all the locations even though there can be potential users in those countries. Since pay-per-click advertising is not cheap (because cost per click has increased a lot for competitive keywords) you have to laser target your traffic so that you’ll get a strong conversion rate.

You can ask yourself whether they’re going to sign up from their mobile device. If the campaigns I’m promoting requires billing information (credit card number, PayPal, etc.) then I choose to show my ads only to desktop and laptop users.

If you’re running a legacy AdWords campaign then you can easily target desktops and laptops only by going to Campaign > Settings > Desktops & laptops, mobile devices and tablets.

Now if you’ve upgraded to Enhanced campaigns then you can still target desktops and laptops only by going to Campaign > Settings > Devices. Change mobile bid adjustment and set bid adjustments for "Mobile devices with full browsers" to “- 100%”.

If you’re still running a legacy AdWords campaign then I suggest you to upgrade to enhanced campaign as Google will upgrade all legacy campaigns to enhanced campaigns starting from July 22, 2013. You can learn more about AdWords Enhanced Campaigns here as they answered few useful questions about upgrading.

Advertisers on Bing Ads can go to Campaign > Settings > TARGETING OPTIONS > Advanced targeting options > Device and you can select Desktops and Laptops, Smartphones, and Tablets.

You can apply your common sense when you promote affiliate products via search engine marketing campaigns. Your focus should be to get the maximum leads/sales and not clicks. And the key is to select the keywords carefully as it can directly impact the performance of your campaign.

For example, if you’re promoting a web hosting company and are bidding on the keyword “web hosting” then you may get tons of traffic but it could be the least targeted keyword since people who search that term may not be looking for a web hosting plan. Instead think about keywords like “buy web hosting”, “buy cheap web hosting”, etc. Tip: Google AdWords Keyword Tool is your friend.

Now that said, if you’re promoting your own products and services then you have to focus on all devices since you primary goal is to get maximum targeted traffic.

I’m pretty sure that If someone ask you to name two search engines, it’s more likely that you mention Google and then maybe Bing.

My default search engine on all the three web browsers – Internet Explorer 9, Google Chrome & Mozilla Firefox – is Google and will be Google itself unless Bing offers me all the advanced search features of Google. Bing does offer an advance search function but only with limited options.

However as an Internet Marketer when it comes to marketing I use Bing and only Bing. Simply because it offers better Return On Investment (ROI). Bing’s conversions are CRAZY as it sends you laser targeted visitors.

Why do I prefer Microsoft adCenter and not Google AdWords?

Google AdWords – it’s highly competitive as almost all marketers target Google and it is becoming even more competitive as more and more advertisers are joining in. So it’s more likely that a wealthier company would outbid you. Try the Google AdWords Keyword Tool, It gives you an idea about the competition for a particular keyword on Google. Besides, the traffic quality on Google is poor when compared to Yahoo! or Bing.

Google’s search results and sponsored ads are heavily manipulated by Search Engine Marketing companies. So unless you use advanced search you’re not going to find what you want. On the Search Settings page I have set the “Results per page” to 100 as the top results on Google for popular keywords are mostly spam.

What you should know about Bing?

Bing is the default search engine on Internet Explorer which is the default web browser for all Windows Operating Systems. That is exactly what makes Bing the default search engine for over 30% of all Internet users.

  • Search Engine demographics shows that Bing users are older, wealthier and less tech-savvy.
  • Searchers on Bing are likely to spend 26.8% more than the average searcher in the U.S. according to comScore.
  • Bing receives most of it’s traffic from US.
  • Bing’s ad exposure has increased after it’s recent merger with Yahoo! Search.
  • Keyword bidding is not as expensive as in Google AdWords.
  • Conversion rate, and hence Return On Investment (ROI), is much higher than Google AdWords because of the quality traffic.

However, the traffic you receive from Bing will be very less when compared to Google as globally the combined market share of Bing – Yahoo is only around 10% while Google holds over 70% market share worldwide.

Now, why is that so? I suppose it’s because of the fact that Bing is the default search engine on Internet Explorer. So Bing users could be Microsoft fanatics (I’m one among them but I still use Google for the above mentioned reason), employees of Microsoft, people who don’t know how to change the default search engine of their web browser, and Bing lovers.

Why you should target Bing?

Just because everyone is advertising on Google doesn’t mean that you should focus only on Google. It makes much more sense to focus on the quality of traffic than quantity.

Today I am going to share a few tips about Microsoft adCenter (formerly MSN adCenter). I believe that all the information written in this article is true, correct and complete.

I. Microsoft adCenter (formerly MSN adCenter) is Microsoft’s online advertising platform after forming an alliance with Yahoo! have an estimated audience of 164 million potential US customers. That’s 30% of US Search Market.

II. According to Microsoft website MSN/Live Search is converting users into buyers at a higher rate than Google or Yahoo and it’s correct too as from my own experience I have found that Microsoft adCenter offers a better conversion rates than Google AdWords. There were times when my conversions were over 25%.

III. The traffic quality of Bing is the best when compared to Google or AOL. It means you get more Return On your Investment (ROI).

IV. The whole Sign Up process is pretty easy with simple and powerful user interface. But I must say that Google AdWords’ interface is the best of all as it’s very simple and easy to use.

V. For customer support I give 5 star rating to Microsoft adCenter. And Google sucks when it comes to customer support. They were sending automated replies instead of responding to my emails. Things have changed and now I feel like Google AdWords offers better customer support as the adCenter Support Center has become complicated.

VI. Pay less for quality traffic. It’s one of the biggest advantages of MSN adCenter over Google AdWords. Microsoft adCenter’s bid rates are much lower than that of Google. The Minimum bid required per click is 0.05$. However the number of clicks are significantly lower than that of Google, it’s because of Google’s 60% market share in search market.

VII. Unlike Google AdWords there is no activation fee for Microsoft adCenter.
