Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of your website in search engine results pages (SERPs) for the targeted keywords. Some of the key aspects of SEO are: Keyword Research, Competitive Analysis (or Competitor Analysis), Website Architecture, Keyword Density, Internal Linking, SERP Tracking, Link Building, Social Media Marketing etc.
What is Competitor Analysis in SEO?
SEO Competitor Analysis (or Competitive Analysis) is all about “Learning From Your Competitors”. Competitor Analysis is the process of analyzing and understanding your competitors’ Internet Marketing strategies and techniques. It’s about identifying your competitor’s strengths and weaknesses.
How To Do Competitive Analysis? Identify Your Competitors And Ask Yourself:
- What Keywords are they targeting?
- How many Quality Backlinks do they have?
- What are their On-Page and Off-Page SEO strategies?
- Are they practicing any Black Hat SEO methods like paid links?
- How many Indexed Pages do they have?
- What are their Traffic sources?
- How well are they ranking in SERPs?
How To Do SEO Competitor Analysis – In a Nutshell
Use Open Site Explorer, Backlink Watch and Alexa to find out the number of backlinks to you and your competitors. It’s all about Quality. If most of the incoming links to your website is from low quality sites (directories, mass blog comments, link farms etc.) then study the link profile of your competitor by analyzing their backlinks and anchor texts.
Google Search “site:your-domain.com and your-competitor.com” to find out the number of indexed pages indexed by Google.
Make sure that you focus on one primary keyword per page. Otherwise several pages will compete for the same keyword(s) which leads to Keyword Cannibalization. You should also detect and remove duplicate content within your website. Use Google Webmaster Tools > Optimization > HTML Improvements to find out duplicate Meta Descriptions, Titles and other issues.
